Philosophy and Aim of Education

The education and research mission of the Department of Computer Science is: "to develop leaders with the capability for succeeding in a highly advanced information society and to create outstanding and innovative information technology that meets the various needs of that society", from the foundations of informatics to cutting-edge industrial techniques.

Based on this mission, we aim to foster "researchers in various areas of computer science equipped with a breadth of knowledge and expertise endowing them with both creativity and flexibility, and computer science professionals with knowledge and specialised practical skills to international standards" through research activities in computer science.

Unification of the Two Programs in the Master's Program in Computer Science

Until 2016, the Department of Computer Science offered two different Master's degree program: the "General Program" and the "Practical Software Development Specialization Program for Advanced IT Personnel Training".

From 2017, both programs will be unified into a single "Master's Program in Computer Science", and a new curriculum will be offered in order to satisfy the needs of the unified program.

ACM-ICPC Asia Regional Contest, Tsukuba, 2015

The University of Tsukuba, together with the Ibaraki prefectural government, has hosted the 2015 edition of the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ACM-ICPC), Asia Regional. The contest took place on Nov/28-30, and had 42 teams from 32 universities, including 7 teams from foreign university. In this contest, the different teams challenged their programming techniques for a chance to go to the World Final, in Thailand.

Three teams from the University of Tsukuba qualified to this contest from the Japanese Domestic Preliminary contest, and achieved 13th, 17th and 31st ranks, respectively.
