From the Chairman

Hiroyuki Kitagawa (Chair)
Department of Computer Science

We must contend with graduate school education positively, because it will be a keystone to train human resource with high degree of professionalism in the next knowledge-based society. Especially it seems that to bring up young researchers, who will take the central role in the “Information Technology” fields, must be social responsibility for our graduate school.

We have “Human Resource Development with Practical IT Skills in Advanced Information Science” program as Initiatives for Attractive education In Graduate Schools, and in our department, we prepare educational systems as Development Program of Practical IT Skills based on the practical IT education among industry, academia and government. This program aims to make graduate school education more practical and evolutional.

This program consists of four subjects below.

  1. Practical System Development Project:In this subject students learn all processes about project of actual information system development and cultivate ability for project management.
  2. Practical Planning Case Study:In this subject students use real case models to design practical plans and to cultivate abilities for planning, business model construction and system design.
  3. Advanced System Development Research Projects:In this subject students propose or practice all parts of project from system design to R&D by using their initiative projects.
  4. Research Leave Internship:In this subject students engage in research at other universities, research institutes and companies for a certain periods to improve their skills or abilities.

We apply above 1-2 subjects to masters’ course students and 3-4 subjects to doctor’s course students.

This program aims to cultivate abilities for project management, planning and system design totally which haven’t been enough dealt with through traditional graduate schools’ educations. It also aims to train human resource. By using leading-edge IT, our human resource will play important roles in R&D or education that meet modern societies’ needs.

Goal for Human Resource Development

In this effort, we aim to train human resource with practical IT knowledge in advanced information science. They will be acceptable by international standards. By using leading-edge IT, our human resource will certainly play important roles in R&D or education meeting modern societies’ needs. Especially in masters’ course, our aim is to train human resource with basic business ability and interdisciplinary knowledge in advanced Information Science. Students learn modern society’s needs and developmental status in every field of IS or IT practically, understand new technologies or theories in the future, and acquire technical capabilities for real system development. On the other hand, in doctors’ course, our focus is to bring up researchers for entire IS field. Especially in this field, it is important even for researchers to learn how development and planning are curried out in actual IT companies. So by using basic knowledge, students must learn IS as a useful subject in the situation very close to the real field, and research new practical theories or systems.

Human Resource Development with Practical IT Skills in Advanced Information Science

Characteristics

In our effort, we work out new curriculum which is based on standard curriculums (which have been conducted in the Department of Computer Science and mainly consisted of wide range of IS subjects and seminars) and added “Development Program of Practical IT Skills” to the standard curriculum above.

  • “Development Program of Practical IT Skills” is our original subjects. And this program mainly aims to know R&D in IT companies, to experience the processes of system developments practically, to be the base of carrying out R&D about new technologies, theories or systems.
  • “Development Program of Practical IT Skills” in masters’ course has two subjects. One is “Practical System Development Project”, in which students execute all processes of practical information system development from planning projects to execution managements by PBL (Project Based Learning) style. The other is “Practical Planning Case Study”, in which students prepare and estimate RFP (Request For Proposal, which is prepared at first stage of system development and determine system lank) and Project Proposal.
  • “Development Program of Practical IT Skills” in doctors’ course also has two subjects. One is “Advanced System Development Research Projects”, in which students take initiatives to design and carry on development projects for making “movable system” as a part of their own R&D activities. The other is “Research Leave Internship”, in which students are sent to other universities, research institutes or companies as long period as possible and engaged in actual R&D.
  • In both courses, we will authorize complement of this program only when one clears our standard and fulfills residency requirement.

Implementation system & Rating

  • This challenge is mainly promoted by ”Promotion Committee for Practical IT Skills among Industry, Academia and Government” with the support of Department of Computer Science.
  • Achievements of this challenge are objectively evaluated by External assessment committee.
