Summary of Entrance Examination (Entrance year 2016)
Department of Computer Science
Master's Course and Doctoral Course
(Includes examinations for working students)

The Department of Computer Science, Graduate School of Systems and Information Engineering, University of Tsukuba, invites students for the following two types of courses.

(1) Master's ("Zenki" : former) Course (This is 2 year program to obtain Master's degree in Engineering for applicants who hold Bachlor's degrees.)

(2) Doctoral ("Kouki" : latter) Course (This is 3 year program to obrain Ph.D degree in Engineering for applicants who hold Master's degrees.)

In the exam of Master's course, we have paper examinations only for fundamental topics of computer science and mathematics and we have prepared a special seat without paper exam for working students. In the exam of the Doctoral course, we give more weight to the oral examination. From 2009, we abolished a paper examination for English and the TOEFL or TOEIC score is necessary for the English exam. The following information is a summary of the entrance examination for year 2013. Please obtain and check the official application form booklet.


< For Applicants to the Master's Course (Including Working Students) >

We provide three entrance examinations for applicants to Master's Course. These are July Exam based on recommendation, August Exam, and February Exam. We also hold two entrance examinations in August and February for admissions of working students. The following is an outline of each exam.

(1) Master's : July Exam Based on Recommendation (Number of admissions: 36 persons)
(Including admissions prepared for Cooperative Graduate School )

Only applicants who satisfy one of the following two requirements can be recommended to apply this exam.
(a) Approximately 70 percent or more of the total number of acquired credits in the undergraduate school are of mark "A" (highest).
(b) Having excellent ability in a certain special field of Computer Science.


The exam is to be held according to the following schedule.

July 2 (Thu.)

Oral Exam (200 points)

13:00-17:00

Interview to each applicant
(Questioned topics include the applicant's major research subjects, motivation, preference, and so on.)

(Note ) 1. Please contact a faculty member (or two faculty members, if any) whose research fields match to your interest prior to the exam.

 

(2) Master's : August Exam (Number of admissions: 71 persons)
(Including admissions prepared for Cooperative Graduate School, Foreign Students, and Working Students)

This is the largest exam and a variety of persons can apply. The exam is performed according to the following schedule. Also, we hold the exam for admissions of working students. Please note that the style of the exam and the method of evaluation for the working students are simplified as explained below (see "Examination for Working Students" below).

For admissions of working students, the style of the exam and the method of evaluation are simplified as explained below.

(3) Master's: February Exam (Number of admissions: 6 persons + alpha)
(including admissions prepared for Cooperative Graduate School, Foreign Students, and Working Students)

The exam is performed according to the following schedule. Also, we hold the exam for admissions of working students. The subjects for the exam are the same as the August exam.

Application form receipt: 2015/12/7(Mon) to 2016/1/7(Thu)

Examination: 2016/2/1(Mon) and 2016/2/2(Tue)

< For Applicants to Doctoral Course (Including Working Students) >

We provide two entrance examinations for applicants to Doctoral Course. These are August Exam and February Exam. We also perform two entrance examinations in August and February for admissions of working students. Note that we actively accept admissions of working students who pursue degrees of Doctors. The following is an outline of each exam.

(1) Doctoral: August Exam (Number of admissions: 23 persons)
(Including admissions prepared for Cooperative Graduate School, Foreign Students, and Working Students)

This is the largest exam and a variety of persons can apply. Also, we perform the exam for admissions of working students. The exam is performed according to the following schedule. Please note that the way of the exam for admissions of working students is the same as that for other students.


August 19 (Wed.)

Foreign Language (100 points)

Oral Exam (200 points)

Questioned topics include the applicant's major research subjects, motivation, preference, and so on. (The exam also includes a 10 minutes presentation on the applicant's past research and future research plan.)

(Note) 2. Please look at "On oral examination" below for details of the oral examination. Please make preparations before the day of exam according to this information.

(2) Doctoral: February Exam (Number of admissions: 5 persons + alpha)
(Including admissions prepared for Cooperative Graduate School, Foreign Students, and Working Students)

The exam is performed according to the following schedule. Also, we hold the exam for admissions of working students. The subjects for the exam are the same as the August exam.

* Areas from which problems for writing exam of fundamentals of computer science are prepared.
(Master's Course only)

The paper exam of Fundamentals of Computer Science will be prepared from the following areas.


Area

Data Structure and Algorithms

Stack, Queue, List, Tree, Graph, Algorithms dealing with these data structures

Fundamentals of Programming

Control structure (conditional structure, loop, etc.), Data type (character string, array, etc.), Function, Procedure, Recursive call

Discrete Mathematics and Logic

Set, Function, Relation, Graph, Propositional logic, Predicate logic

Logic Circuit

Boolean algebra, Karnaugh map, Combinatorial circuit

(For Both Master's and Doctoral Courses)

Please attach the TOEIC Official Score Certificate or the TOEFL Examinee's Score Record to the application form. Please submit the form on the first day of the examination when the Department specifies.  

(Note) 1. The score sheets (certificates) dated July, 2013 or later are valid.

(Note) 2. With regard to the TOEFL score, TOEFL-iBT, TOEFL-PBT, and TOEFL-CBT are valid (TOEFL-ITP is not valid).

On September 27, 2006, R-Prometric Company announced that CBT test in Japan is finished on September 30, 2006 so that they will provide only iBT test from October. See the website of R-Prometric company for the details.


* On oral examination
(Doctoral Course only)

In the oral exam of Doctoral Course, in addition to making questions on applicant's major research subjects, motivation and preference, and so on, we ask each applicant to make a 10 minutes presentation on his/her past research and future research plan. It is recommended to use the PowerPoint for presentation. We prepare necessary electronic equipments (a PC projector), but each applicant must bring his/her own personal computer. Please prepare a presentation before the day of exam and bring your own personal computer. We will send printed copies (same as those on the Web) for persons who cannot access from the Web. Those persons should send a request to the address below WITH THE NAME OF COURSE (Computer Science). The request must include an A4 size envelope for return together with stamps of 390 Japanese yen.
